HSS, LimaCorporate to collaborate on provider-based 3-D printing facility
Hospital for Special Surgery announced it will form the first provider-based additive manufacturing 3-D printing facility for custom complex implants in collaboration with LimaCorporate.
A combination of LimaCorporate’s advanced technology and experience and Hospital for Special Surgery’s (HSS) expertise in clinical care and biomechanical engineering, the collaboration aims to foster and accelerate innovation in complex orthopedic joint care resulting in new products and solutions for patients across the United States, according to a press release from HSS.
Expected to be operational by early 2020, the release noted LimaCorporate will operate the new facility and be the registered manufacturer for all devices designed and produced. The facility, which will initially serve hospitals in the region before making devices available to all providers in the United States, will allow patients in need of complex implants to be scanned on-site.
“We aim to provide seamless coordination of care to achieve the best patient outcomes for patients with complicated joint reconstruction needs,” Leonard Achan, RN, MA, ANP, chief innovation officer at HSS, said in the release. “Having Lima’s technology on campus will allow us to treat our patients more effectively with close collaboration of surgeons, engineers and custom implant manufacturing, which is crucial when dealing with challenging conditions.”
