Results published in Medicine showed arthroscopic bone grafting and percutaneous K-wire fixation effectively treated scaphoid nonunion with thorough assessment and comprehensive management.

Using serial plain radiographs, researchers assessed bone union among 27 patients with a scaphoid nonunion who underwent treatment with arthroscopic bone grafting and K-wire fixation between November 2008 and February 2014. Researchers measured modified Mayo wrist score and VAS for pain preoperatively and at final follow-up. They also compared the two measures to evaluate functional outcome.

Results showed 96.29% of patients achieved union, with an average radiologic union time of 10 weeks. Researchers noted mean range of motion of the wrist improved from 167° preoperatively to 178° at final follow-up, as well as an improvement in mean grip strength. Patients also experienced improvements in the average modified Mayo wrist score from 60.19 preoperatively to 83.46 at final follow-up. Researchers found a decrease in average VAS pain score from 6.38 preoperatively to 1.59 at final follow-up. – by Casey Tingle
