PHILADELPHIA — Thorsten Gehrke, MD, discussed how ambitious an undertaking the International Consensus Meeting on Musculoskeletal Infection was, with more than 800 invited experts. The biggest challenges were the organizers’ plan to cover the many types of infections encountered in all orthopedic subspecialties and the attempt during the 3-day meeting to answer about 650 still-unanswered questions about these infections, for which there is little or no evidence to support treatment.
“We evaluated and researched more than 200,000 papers,” Gehrke told Healio.com/Orthopedics.
“I think, at the end, it was successful. It was a very intense meeting. The discussions were sometimes extremely controversial but, at the end — and that’s the good news — we found something like a consensus for almost all questions. There was only one question we did not find a consensus. So, at the end, we can say it was successful, hopefully. How successful it was will show in the future,” he said.
