Lipogems announced it received FDA clearance for its Micro-fragmented Adipose Tissue Transplant system which uses the body’s own fat tissue.

The system, which is intended for orthopedic and arthroscopic procedures, comes in a kit and involves a minimally invasive procedure to harvest, concentrate and transfer patients’ adipose tissue, according to a press release .

As noted in the release, the procedure can reportedly be done in an office or surgical setting in less than 1 hour. The transplant system uses saline to rinse and remove contaminants and then microfragments the tissue to an optimal size , retaining the fat tissue’s natural , beneficial properties.

“Lipogems is offered by leading orthopedic physicians from around the world and encourages patients to seek care from board-certified orthopedic physicians and to ensure the technology they are using is cleared or approved by the FDA,” Carl Llewellyn, president of Lipogems, said in the release.

Lipogems is exhibiting at the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine Annual Meeting on July 5 to 8, 2018, in San Diego.
