Main theme enhanced the educational value of 19th EFORT Congress in Barcelona
The 19th EFORT Congress took place in Barcelona 30 May to 1 June 2018 and the main theme of the Congress was Innovation & New Technologies.
From where does innovation originate? Orthopaedic and traumatology surgeons often state that most of the innovative ideas in implant design have their roots in Europe. Therefore, this year Innovation & New Technologies was showcased at the congress to demonstrate change in daily practice for surgeons and added value for patients.
Highlights of the congress included information about advances in biomaterials and implant technologies, new tissue regeneration techniques, robotics and computer-assisted surgery, the use of 3-D printing and telemedicine, just to mention a few.
Participants had the chance to discover three innovative approaches at the meeting in Barcelona:
- “How M2M, IoT, Industry 4.0 relates to emerging technologies in health care,” which was a guest lecture by Hugo Scagnetti, Head of Innovation at Telefonica, in Spain;
- Surgeon skills training held at the first ever hands-on Surgical Skill Workshop; and
- The EFORT Plaza, which was a new networking location that consisted of areas in education inclusive of eLearning and interactive spotlight presentations given in the onsite theater Forum.
Further, the extensive scientific program covered more than 180 sessions, including the Comprehensive Review Course, as well as the Erwin Morscher honorary lecture presented by Prof. Reinhard Graf (Austria) and the Michael Freeman honorary lecture by Prof. Philippe Hernigou (France).
Among the 3,217 abstracts submitted, our expert panel of scientific advisors selected 576 abstracts to be presented as free papers, 63 as clinical cases and 1,164 as posters. We also welcomed the Indian Orthopaedic Association as the invited nation this year.
