Compared with the Spaso technique, investigators found the Boss-Holzach Matter self-reduction technique yielded less pain in patients with anterior shoulder dislocations.

Researchers identified 60 acute shoulder dislocations and randomized 30 to treatment with the Spaso technique, in which an ER doctor guided the reduction, and randomized 30 dislocations to treatment with the Boss-Holzach-Matter self-reduction technique. Investigators recorded the pain experienced by the patients using the VAS. Demographics, reduction time and success rate were also recorded.

Results showed patients treated with the Boss-Holzach Matter self-reduction technique compared with those treated with the Spaso technique experienced less pain during reduction. Investigators noted patients treated with the Boss-Holzach Matter technique had a mean pain score of 3.57 vs. 5.26 for patients treated with the Spaso technique. The two treatment groups were not significantly different with regard to reduction time. – by Monica Jaramillo
