Major League Baseball pitchers with core and hip injuries spent a similar amount of time on the disabled list compared with players who had other injuries, according to results published in Arthroscopy.

After collecting demographic, performance and injury data of 330 MLB pitchers, with 454 injuries placed on the disabled list from 2014 to 2015 seasons, researchers analyzed core and hip/groin injuries. They compared injury year data with career data and against other injury groups.

Results showed 14% and 7% of all injuries were core injuries and hip/groin injuries, respectively. Researchers noted pitchers with core injuries spent an average of 47 days and pitchers with hip/groin injuries spent an average of 37.7 days on the disabled list. Although 78% of pitchers with core injuries were able to return from the disabled list the same season, 46% of pitchers with core injuries returned to the disabled list. Researchers also found 73% of pitchers with hip/groin injuries were removed from the disabled list the same season and 56% returned to the disabled list. Besides fewer innings per games pitched and more pitches per game among starter pitchers, results showed no changes in workload. Pitchers in the core injury group had a decrease in fastball velocity the year of injury, researchers found.

According to results, pitchers with core injuries had slightly fewer home runs and strikeouts per nine innings and pitchers with hip/groin injuries had slightly more strikeouts per nine innings. Researchers noted no differences between the two groups with all other performance statistics, including earned run average and wins above replacement. – by Casey Tingle
