VIDEO: Minimally invasive double approach to the lumbar spine in revision surgery
In this video from Open Operating Theatre, Roberto Bassani, MD, from Milan, discussed how to perform a minimally invasive approach to the lumbar spine in revision surgery.
For the first part of the surgery, the patient is placed in the supine position for the anterior approach from L5-S1. The approach is performed through a 4-cm incision on the projection of the L5 disc. An abdominal retractor system is used for the dissection of the disc. A prefilled tantalum cage and titanium neutralization plate are inserted and close the first part of surgery.
Patient is then placed in the prone position for the posterior approach. The removal of hardware is performed with two 30-mm lateral incisions on both sides of the midline. Hardware is removed, and new revision screws are inserted at L5 and L4.
This video is intended as a teaching tool to help surgeons prepare for surgery or they can use it as a refresher on the surgical technique and indications for this surgery.
