Current system that is focused on health care, not health, must be fixed, speaker says

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. — This is the ideal time to re-focus on value in health care, a presenter at the Interdisciplinary Conference on Orthopedic Value-Based Care said.
The problem today is not cost, quality or access, “but I think the primary problem ... is we just lost sight of our goal. So, what is our goal?” Kevin J. Bozic, MD, MBA, professor and chair of the department of surgery and perioperative care at Dell Medical School at the University of Texas at Austin, said.
“Everyone of us in this room, no matter what aspect of the health care sector you are in, everything that we do, true north, when we wake up every day, is to try to produce greater health for our patients per dollar spent. That is what we call value,” he said.
Creating and delivering value in health care can be achieved, according to Bozic, by changing the delivery model so patients do not have to navigate the health care system on their own and so all professionals involved function at the top of their license “providing what we are good at.”
For example, Bozic’s institution uses an integrated practice unit model “where the patient is at the center and we bring the care to the patient.”
That patient-centric care, he said, might include him, a nurse practitioner, chiropractor, acupuncturist, dietician, behavior health specialist, social worker and a pharmacist.
However, it is important to recognize that not every patient needs to see an orthopedic surgeon, according to Bozic.
“Not only does that create greater value for the patients, but it addresses some of the burnout issues that [were discussed earlier],” he said. – by Susan M. Rapp
