Accepted abstracts at the core of the program for 19th EFORT Annual Congress

This year, thousands of members of the EFORT community have once more demonstrated the exceptionally high standard of their scientific work in all orthopaedics and trauma areas. The 3,217 abstracts submitted for our Barcelona Congress have now received a final average score after a 2-month process driven by our expert reviewers, to whom we are grateful for their excellent work and commitment. Their collaboration on this matter is of high importance for EFORT and allows us to continue our mission of delivering high-quality education across Europe.
In mid-January, the EFORT Head Office in Rolle, Switzerland hosted the so-called “Barcelona allocation meeting,” which was an essential milestone of the 2018 Congress. In 2 intensive days of work, around 30% of the entire scientific program was consolidated by building more than 140 abstract-based sessions. This allocation meeting is therefore the culminating step of the review process, which guarantees the best pieces of work are selected for on-site presentation at the congress. The members of the EFORT Science Committee thoroughly checked the accuracy of each grading and assigned the higher-quality abstracts to be included into sessions under a unique and common sub-topic. Hence, 53 Free Paper sessions (including abstracts accepted as 5-minute podium presentations), 45 Poster Walks (highlighting the best-rated posters of each sub-topic), 41 Poster Sessions (displaying wall paper presentations during the 3 days of the congress), as well as several sessions focusing entirely on Clinical Reports, were put together.
A total of 1,843 abstracts have been accepted: 568 free papers; 1,194 posters; and 81 clinical reports are now part of the scientific program of the Barcelona 2018 Congress. Abstract-based sessions aim to increase interaction among participants and promote a lively exchange among all experts.
During the review process, the EFORT Science Committee occasionally changed the type of presentation format for some of the accepted abstracts. The intent of this action was to maintain the high standards of quality of the scientific content while maximizing the chances for all good submissions to be presented on-site.
On Thursday, 1 February 2018, all presenting authors and co-authors of submitted abstracts were notified by email about the acceptance/rejection status of their work, as well as about the final type of presentation for each abstract that has been accepted. The type of presentation stated in the acceptance notification will overrule the type of presentation the authors selected during the submission process or the one suggested after the first step of the scoring, and no further changes will be made.
The presenting author of an accepted abstract must undertake to attend the congress and present the work in the session and at the time designated by the EFORT Science Committee.
EFORT therefore requires all presenting authors to register by Friday 9 March 2018 at the latest. Only registrations for the full congress from presenting authors will be accepted.
If the presenting author is unable to present his/her work at the congress, it is his/her responsibility to ensure one of the co-authors take over that role.
The complete online scientific program will be available on the EFORT website starting on 15 March 2018 to allow all participants to plan in detail their attendance at sessions and maximize their educational experience during the congress. Stay tuned.
