University of California, San Diego Health appoints new sports medicine chief
Catherine M. Robertson, MD, has been appointed as chief of sports medicine at the University of California, San Diego Health.
She is the head team physician for the San Diego Padres, the lead physician for University of California (UC), San Diego Health system’s partnership with the U.S. Olympic Committee and is team physician for the San Diego Sea Lions women’s professional soccer team. She is also the team physician for all UC San Diego Tritons sport teams.

“Dr. Robertson is a fantastic surgeon and colleague,” Steven Garfin, MD, chair of the department of orthopedic surgery at UC San Diego School of Medicine, said in a press release. “She tailors surgical procedures to best suit her individual patients and their unique bodies, injuries and goals — and her patients love her for it. We are very fortunate to have her leading our sports medicine program.”
According to the press release, she is known for using minimally invasive techniques for treatment of complex ligament, tendon, cartilage and meniscus injuries that restore joint function. Robertson has published various scientific articles, presented at national meetings and has authored several book chapters.
