Second value-based orthopedic care meeting to be held in February

The conference aims to transform how value-based care is implemented, organizers said.

Orthopedic surgeons, nurses, anesthesiologists and health care executives will meet Feb. 9 to Feb. 11, 2018, in Newport Beach, Calif., for the second Interdisciplinary Conference on Orthopedic Value-Based Care. The goal of the meeting, which is organized by the American College of Perioperative Medicine, is to define and teach the concept of value-based care in orthopedics and introduce meeting attendees to new clinical models, such as the perioperative surgical home, a concept endorsed by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

This is a transformative meeting and its audience brings various health care providers together at one conference. The 2017 meeting sold-out and more than 40% of the attendees at this year’s meeting were in teams of three or more people from the same hospital, according to Zeev N. Kain, MD, MBA, conference activity chair.

“The focus is around improving value in the perioperative management of surgical patients, specifically orthopedic surgical patients, and the focus will be on what does that mean in terms of how are we defining value, why is it important, what are the competencies that we need in order to improve value,” Kevin J. Bozic, MD, MBA, conference activity co-director, told Orthopedics Today.

Three tracks, 32 presenters

Topics for discussion will be presented in three parallel tracks with a clinical, financial and operational focus on the orthopedic patient.

“The 32 speakers are simply outstanding and include orthopedic leaders from such hospitals as Hospital for Special Surgery and Rothman Institute, as well as world renown speakers from the nursing, administration, anesthesiology and physical therapy disciplines,” Kain told Orthopedics Today.

Boot camps have been added that will focus on digital health and outpatient joint replacement, Kain said, noting the scope of the meeting has been expanded to include issues in spine surgery, as well as issues related to joint replacement surgery.

Updates on care models

“The topics are contemporary and reflect what has happened in a few years in orthopedic surgery within the context of value-based care within the last 12 months and, obviously, it is an area that changes daily,” Kain said.

By the meeting’s conclusion, Kain hopes attendees will have practical knowledge about “how to build a viable practice based upon orthopedic value-based care principles”

He also expects attendees will leave with the know-how to implement innovative clinical care models, such as enhanced recovery and the surgical home.

“They should understand the trend to outpatient surgery and be able to build an outpatient surgical program,” Kain said. “They should understand the trend overall in health care of digital health.”

Attendees should also come away “feeling energized and less intimidated by the transition to value,” Bozic said.

For Kain, however, the most important aspect of the meeting is for attendees to network and learn from each other.

“We have assigned seating and are making sure people sit next to people not from their organization because we want people to network,” Kain said. “We think the network opportunities are important and we want people from organizations that are less progressive to learn from organizations such as Rothman and [the Hospital for Special Surgery] HSS.” – by Casey Tingle
