By including eight Interactive Expert Exchange sessions in the 2018 congress program, the EFORT Science Committee has built, together with several world-recognized experts, a specific agenda for confirmed specialists and/or senior consultants in various orthopedic and trauma fields.
Indeed, the Interactive Expert Exchange (IEEs) scheduled for our upcoming Barcelona meeting will allow attendees to develop or reject their engagement toward an unambiguous medical choice by extensively discussing all procedures and treatments available for a particular medical condition. The session format is the equivalent of an open discussion within a group of fellows confronting each other about their daily practices. During this direct exchange, a high involvement of practitioners from the audience is expected to continuously challenge each indication or technique presented by the faculty panel. The formula of these 2-hour-long, extra-paying sessions includes an audience vote to question and involve the attendees, as well as to measure the impact of the controversy.
The organizer appoints four orthopedic surgeons excelling in the session main topic who, together with the organizer, give related presentations that address different problems generally found in the given medical scenario. By directly asking, “What would each of you do?” every treatment proposal will be justified or disputed depending on the strength of the existing evidence and the most persuasive advice from experts. As a second step, every speaker presents a few clinical cases bringing additional information and an accurate example (of both success and failure) for each condition or technique.
Two invited “provocateurs” raise controversy for all questions addressed during the discussion periods to increase the interactivity from the audience by continuously questioning the position of each speaker. A final analysis of any changed opinions is performed based on a second vote, during which the same initial questions are asked.
The analysis of complex situations, which are both challenging and difficult to treat, will benefit from a shared expertise. The speakers of any IEE have diverse approaches, present new treatments and introduce special solutions that aim to help specialists and senior practitioners to improve their skills.
