Professional baseball pitchers who required a revision ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction and those who did not had no statistically significant differences in the length of time to return to sport, according to results.
Researchers categorized 569 professional baseball pitchers who underwent ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction (UCLR) as those who required a revision UCLR and those who did not. Researchers recorded date of the index UCLR, as well as the date of the first game back at any professional level after surgery and the date the pitcher returned to the same level of play. Researchers compared length of time between date of first game back and date of return to the same level of play between pitchers who required a revision UCLR and pitchers who did not.
Results showed pitchers who did not require a revision UCLR and those who did had no statistically significant differences in the length of time to return to sport at any professional level or at the same professional level. When compared with a control group of pitchers matched for age, handedness, level of competition and date of the primary UCLR, researchers noted pitchers who required revision UCLR returned to any level of play almost 2 months earlier and returned to the same level of play more than 2 months earlier. However, this result was not statistically significant. – by Casey Tingle
