Metaphyseal sleeve fixation yields high survivorship after revision TKA

Recently published results showed a high rate of survivorship free of revision for aseptic loosening at 5-years when using metaphyseal sleeve fixation to enhance component stability during revision total knee arthroplasty.
Researchers reviewed 280 patients who received 393 metaphyseal sleeves during revision total knee arthroplasty (TKA) from 2006 to 2014. They reported 144 sleeves were femoral and 249 were tibial.
Data revealed a 12% rate of perioperative complications, of which 6.5% were intraoperative fractures. Researchers removed 2.5% of sleeves for deep infection during component resection (2%) and for aseptic loosening in a femoral sleeve (0.8%) and a tibial sleeve (0.8%). Results showed femoral and tibial sleeves had a 5-year survivorship free of revision for aseptic loosening of 96% and 99.5%, respectively. Outcomes were not significantly affected by level of constraint, bone loss, sleeve or stem fixation and revision indication, according to results. – by Casey Tingle
