Different stem geometry yielded variations of increased anteversion

Use of a tapered wedge stem in total hip arthroplasty yielded a greater variation in anteversion increases compared with use of metaphyseal filling stems, according to results.

Researchers compared patients who underwent total hip arthroplasty for the treatment of osteoarthritis with either a metaphyseal filling stem (n=78) or a tapered wedge stem (n=83). Researchers used CT scans to measure preoperative femoral anteversion at five levels and postoperative stem anteversion.

Results showed the tapered-wedge stem group had a greater increase in anteversion vs. the metaphyseal-filling stem group. Researchers noted a significantly larger variation of the increase in anteversion in the tapered-wedge stem group, while femoral anteversion was more highly and positively correlated with the metaphyseal-filling stem group. – by Casey Tingle
