Recent study results demonstrated that mortality decreased by 41% in patients who underwent total hip arthroplasty after the implementation of the Surgical Care Improvement Project guidelines.

The researchers used the Nationwide Inpatient Sample to identify 345,875 elective total hip arthroplasties (THAs) performed between 2003 and 2011. They determined patient demographics, morbidity, incidence of nonfatal cardiac complications and fatal cardiac complications and overall mortality correlated with cardiac complications before the implementation of the Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP) and after the implementation.

After implementation of SCIP guidelines, overall mortality after cardiac complications decreased by 41%. Investigators noted nonfatal cardiac complications after THA increased by 5%; however, they observed a significant increase in postoperative inpatient mortality, stroke, fatal hypotension, fatal myocardial infarction, nonfatal cardiac arrest and fatal cardiac arrest. – by Monica Jaramillo
