No significant change seen in obesity status after TLIF despite clinical improvements
Although investigators found improvements for function and pain, they discovered no significant change in weight after obese patients underwent transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion.
Researchers performed a retrospective cohort study of 56 patients with a BMI of greater than 30 kg/m2 and who underwent single-level transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion. Investigators compared preoperative and postoperative BMI, Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) and VAS scores. A subgroup analysis was performed of patients who achieved substantial clinical benefit.
Results showed the mean preoperative BMI was 34.8 kg/m2, mean preoperative ODI was 66.2 and mean preoperative VAS score was 7.1. Investigators noted the mean change in ODI was –33.1, mean change in VAS was –4.1 and the mean change in BMI was +0.15 kg/m2. Forty-six patients achieved substantial clinical benefit.
According to researchers, patients with substantial clinical benefit had a mean preoperative BMI of 34.8 kg/m2 and a mean postoperative BMI of 34.7 kg/m2. – by Monica Jaramillo
