Results from this study demonstrated that for pediatric patients with slipped capital femoral epiphysis, patient-specific 3-D models helped with surgical planning of triplane proximal femoral osteotomy.

Researchers identified 15 children with symptomatic proximal femoral deformity due to slipped capital femoral epiphysis who were treated with three-plane proximal femoral osteotomy (TPFO). Ten patients were included for the study. Of these patients, five were treated with a 3-D preoperative planning model. All 10 patients were treated by a single surgeon. To evaluate for a learning curve, patients who were treated with the model were compared to patients treated by two senior partners who did not use the model. Investigators collected perioperative data, which included BMI, surgical time and fluoroscopy time.

Results showed that at the time of TPFO, all children had comparable BMI. Investigators noted all three groups similarly improved with regard to postoperative radiographic parameters.

The researchers wrote, “On average, surgical time decreased by 45 minutes and 38 minutes, and fluoroscopy time decreased by 50% and 25%, in the model group compared with the no-model and senior groups, respectively.” – by Monica Jaramillo
