Results from this study indicated long-term cumulative success rate of nearly 99% for patients who underwent total knee arthroplasty using a medial pivot knee arthroplasty system.
“The purpose of this study was to evaluate the long-term clinical and radiographic outcomes of the Advance Medial Pivot (AMP) Knee System,” Spyridon P. Galanakos, MD(Orth), PhD, one of the study authors, told Healio.com/Orthopedics. “To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study which examined the outcome of this system for a period of 17 years (average follow-up: 15.2 years; range: 15 [years] to 17 years).”
He added, “This is the longest study using the AMP knee system by our institution, which was one of the first to use this prosthesis in 1998. Also, this series was demonstrated by a large number of patients from an independent center, operated by a single surgeon. No aseptic loosening was observed and the cumulative success rate was 98.8% at 17 years of follow-up, including all kinds of failure.”
Researchers identified 325 patients with knee osteoarthritis who underwent total knee arthroplasty with the Advance Medial Pivot Knee System (MicroPort Orthopedics Inc.). Investigators used validated rating systems including the Knee Society clinical rating system, WOMAC, SF-12 and Oxford knee score. Radiographs were also used. In addition, patients were asked to assess their pain relief and performance of either regular activities or age-appropriate work or sports.
Results showed the Knee Society ratings, WOMAC index, SF-12 score and Oxford knee score significantly improved in all patients. Investigators noted at the final follow-up, 94% of patients with a mean knee flexion of 120° returned to their age-appropriate activities. At 17 years, the cumulative success rate was 98.8%, according to the survival analysis. ‒ by Monica Jaramillo
