SAN DIEGO — At the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Annual Meeting, Darwin D. Chen, MD, and Jonathan Robinson, MD, spoke about their study of the influence of gender on 30-day outcomes after total hip arthroplasty or total knee arthroplasty using a large national database. Researchers identified female gender as an independent risk factor for urinary tract infections, blood transfusion and non-home discharge after total hip arthroplasty and total knee arthroplasty.  Male gender was an independent risk factor for postoperative sepsis, myocardial infarction and acute renal failure.
