No link seen between infection and transfusion, blood loss risk after revision TKA

The presence of infection alone did not increase the risk for both transfusion and blood loss; although, septic revisions had higher transfusion rates and blood loss rates, according to recently published study results.

Researchers retrospectively reviewed 547 patients with a total of 626 revision total hip arthroplasties (THA). According to the Musculoskeletal Infection Society criteria for periprosthetic joint infection, investigators classified the procedures as either septic or aseptic. Multiple regression analysis was used to determine independent risk factors for transfusion rates and blood loss.

Results showed septic revision THA compared with aseptic revision THA had higher transfusion rates. Investigators found infection was not an independent risk factor for both transfusion and blood loss after adjusting potential confounders. Independent risk factors that correlated with a higher chance for transfusion included an increase in age, a higher American Society of Anesthesiologists score, lower preoperative hemoglobin, use of cell saver and complex revision surgery. by Monica Jaramillo
