LAHAINA, Hawaii — At Orthopedics Today Hawaii 2017, Frank A. Liporace, MD, discussed treatment of femoral shaft fractures with intermedullary nails.

“Femur fractures are something we are all familiar with. What is important is to not to just say, ‘It is just a nail.’ The number one thing, whether we nail from the top or the bottom, is to consider having a perfect reduction while prepping the canal and placing the implant and blocking the top or the bottom,” he said.

He also said surgeons should not be afraid to do small open approaches that are biologically friendly and to use adjuncts, such as a clamp or small plates, to achieve goals.
