EFORT

During the Interactive Expert Exchanges held at the EFORT Annual Congress, orthopaedic surgeons who are focused on specific procedures or treatments can have in-depth discussions with world-recognized leaders who are passionate about the same topics.

These sessions are restricted to 80 participants each and require an extra registration fee for admission. The goal is to facilitate an open exchange between the audience and faculty on specific topics. The Interactive Expert Exchanges (IEEs) are essentially an informal discussion among a group of fellows who challenge each other to change their position on a topic.

The IEEs are 2 hours long and include 1 hour of presentations and voting, as well as a 1-hour discussion around individual opinions. The general format of the IEEs is as follows:

Part 1/Introduction – Via two initial questions, each faculty member on the presenting panel introduces his or her subtopics and the audience answers all the open questions during a first voting round (10 minutes). Each speaker presents evidence linked to the questions being considered to justify one choice or another. Then the speaker describes his or her preferred indications and/or techniques (four presenters for 10 minutes each).

Part 2/Discussion – In this part of the IEEs, speakers present clinical cases linked to the initial questions and address the problem by directly asking the participants, “What would you do?” Additional input is provided by two invited “provocateurs.” During the discussion period, they elicit controversy from the audience by continuously questioning the position of each speaker (1 hour).

Part 3/Summary – A second voting session is held during the summary portion, which determines possible changes in the medical opinion of the audience. The closing discussion provides a quick analysis of the results from the session (10 minutes).
