The American Joint Replacement Registry announced providers of Blue Shield of California that participate in the registry will automatically be given authorization for hip and knee replacements, effective the first quarter of 2017.

“This is great news for the state of California’s patients who are having hip or knee replacement surgery,” James I. Huddleston III, MD, medical director for the California Joint Replacement Registry (CJRR), a subsidiary of the American Joint Replacement Registry (AJRR), said in the release. “Automatically receiving authorization for their insurance reimbursement gives patients and providers one less thing to worry about so they can focus on their health and recovery.”

The AJRR/CJRR reportedly aids with federal quality initiatives, insurer’s distinction programs and state collaboratives. CJRR reportedly has its own state-wide registry that includes more than 60,000 patients from California, which makes up approximately 11% of the AJRR.
