NASS announces 2016 Recognition Award winners

The North American Spine Society recently announced the winners of its 2016 Recognition Awards, according to a press release.

Keith H. Bridwell, MD, won the Leon Wiltse Award for excellence in leadership and/or clinical research in spine care. According to the release, both Samuel K. Cho, MD, and Lukas P. Zebala, MD, nominated Bridwell for the award. It was noted Bridwell, a prolific researcher, has advanced spinal deformity surgery for the past 30 years.

The Henry Farfan Award, which recognizes outstanding contributions in spine-related basic science research, was awarded to Makarand V. Risbud, PhD. He was nominated by James D. Kang, MD, Irving Shapiro, PhD; Alexander R. Vaccaro, MD, PhD; and Jill Urban, PhD. According to the release, Risbud has recently investigated mechanisms by which inflammatory cytokines promote disc degeneration.

The David Selby Award, which recognized a North American Spine Society (NASS) member who has contributed to the art and science of spine care, was awarded to James B. Reynolds, MD. Reynolds was nominated by Eric J. Muehlbauer, MJ, CAE. Reynolds has devoted his time to providing invaluable guidance on critical financial matters.

Charles A. Mick, MD, was awarded the Spine Advocacy Award for his federal advocacy efforts on behalf of patients and members of NASS, according to the press release. Mick’s greatest attribute is his willingness to volunteer his time to NASS whenever he is called upon, no matter the issue, according to the release. – by Dan O’Neill
