Freddie H. Fu, MD, DSc(Hon), DPs(Hon), was awarded the first honorary membership in the Italian Society of Knee, Arthroscopy, Sports, Cartilage and Orthopaedic Technologies — SIGASCOT — at the organization’s National Congress held in Florence, Italy, 28 - 30 September.

Outgoing SIGASCOT president Prof. Stefano Zaffagnini, MD, surprised Fu with the award. Zaffagnini said it was in recognition of Fu’s outstanding contribution to education and improvement in clinical and research within orthopaedics.

“The culture and history of Italian medicine has always intrigued me. Michelangelo was both an artist and an anatomist,” Fu told Orthopaedics Today Europe after the meeting. “I am humbled to receive this award from SIGASCOT. It has reinforced my belief in respecting the past in order to embrace the future.”

Of Fu, Zaffagnini told Orthopaedics Today Europe, “His friendship and close relationship with the Italian orthopaedic community has allowed several Italian orthopaedists to improve their skill and increased the level of capacity and knowledge in our Italian society.”

Zaffagnini, who was the first Italian fellow in Fu’s department in 1993, said it was fitting and a great pleasure for him to be selected to recognize Fu with this honor.
