The abstract submission system for the 18th EFORT Annual Congress is accessible through Sunday 13 November 2016 23:59 CET.
To ensure an easy and efficient abstract submission and handling process for the Vienna Congress, we have updated our online platform and implemented a mobile-optimized website design. Regardless of where you are located geographically or in what time zone you work or live, you can access the system. This can even be done from mobile phones.
Those who submit abstracts can preview the final version of their abstract version in real-time and receive instant confirmation of any new abstracts that are sent or existing ones that are amended. Author information, category and the core data of an abstract can be updated freely through the online platform through the end of the day 13 November, when the submission process closes.
There are two possibilities for presenting a study orally at the congress in a podium presentation. You may submit your complete study in the Free Paper category or submit your clinical report under the Clinical Case category. To help authors adapt the data for their work accordingly during submission, the abstract content sections are specific to these two types of submissions.
Free Papers
Abstracts in the Free Papers category are expected to have high scientific quality. These should correspond to complete studies with outstanding results and innovative conclusions. The abstracts selected for this portion of the meeting will be presented orally in sessions within in the congress’ overall program.
In addition, the three best-rated Free Papers will be selected for the EFORT Free Paper Award. Authors of the papers selected for this award will receive a special certificate during the opening ceremony of the 18th EFORT Annual Congress.
Clinical Cases
Abstracts accepted as clinical cases will also be presented orally during the congress in specific clinical sessions that include an interactive discussion about each case presented. Clinical cases that are submitted should refer to a single case report that presents scientific value for the use of a specific treatment or technique.
Posters
Authors who may prefer to have attendees participate in a more informal dialogue about their research results should consider submitting abstracts in the Poster category. Posters and the discussions these inspire can lead to a scientific exchange among a small group of experts either during poster sessions or poster walks.
Summaries or information submitted in this category can be based on preliminary results or correspond to short studies or trials. Material with a high scientific level is expected in these instances. Abstracts accepted under this category will be presented during the congress as wall paper posters. Although images and tables are not allowed as part of the abstract content, authors are welcome to add this kind of detail to the final poster to better document their work. A large display area will be dedicated to poster presentations, and poster walks will be organized during the congress so the best-rated posters can be evaluated by well-known physicians in the corresponding fields.
The 30 best-rated posters will be displayed in a featured area during all 3 days of the meeting and 10 of those posters will be selected for the Jacques Duparc Award and receive special distinction during the opening ceremony.
Opportunities for nurses
Next year, there will be opportunities for orthopaedic and/or trauma nurses or health care professionals to participate in the congress and share their experiences. There are many studies that can complement the purely clinical and scientific data presented by our surgeons that can enhance the congress. These might be ones that focus on the improvement of patients’ health, management of rehabilitation, mitigating postoperative complications and other issues related to how orthopaedic surgery impacts patients. To submit these kinds of abstracts, there is a Nurse category.
For the 2017 congress, nurse’s abstracts will be reviewed according to their scientific category and accepted types of work, either as a free paper or poster. These will be part of the normal abstract-based oral and poster sessions embedded in the overall meeting program.
Final details
If you are ready to submit an abstract for possible inclusion in the scientific program, there are some extra guidelines to consider.
There is no restriction on the number of abstracts each registered participant can submit. However, among those, each person can only have a maximum of three abstracts accepted for oral presentations and a maximum of three abstracts accepted for poster presentations. Furthermore, only one category of presentation should be chosen per abstract, such as Free Paper, Poster, Clinical Case or Nurse. Submissions in multiple categories are not allowed.
An email address is required for each coauthor. Communication between EFORT and the authors of materials submitted for the congress is only ensured for those coauthors whose contact details are provided during the initial submission process.
Abstract categories
We suggest one consider the scientific category carefully. EFORT reserves the right to change the category of abstracts submitted. Should this occur, authors will be informed of such changes.
Plans are for the review process to be completed by the end of 2016 and for authors of accepted abstracts to be notified via email on Friday, 27 January 2017.
As part of the submission process for the 18th EFORT Congress that will be held in Vienna in 2017, the author who is scheduled to present a selected abstract must attend the congress and ensure he or she can present the abstract in the session and at the time designated by the scientific committee. Therefore, EFORT requires all presenting authors to register for the congress by 27 February 2017 at the latest. If the presenting author is unable to present the accepted work at the congress, it is his or responsibility to ensure one of the coauthors can give the presentation.
The complete scientific program will be available online beginning Wednesday, 15 March 2017. Send EFORT an innovative abstract and secure an active role in one of the largest educational events in orthopaedics and trauma in Europe.
