SpineSource Inc. announced it has launched the L-Varlock lumbar cage, the reportedly only expandable interbody cage that can adjust in situ from a lordotic angle of 0° to 24° and up to 7 mm of expansion, according to a company press release.

The lumbar cage is made of titanium alloy and is being launched through SpineSource’s independent spinal implant sales professionals throughout the United States.

“Once again, it is back to the future with spine,” Tom Mitchell, founder and chief executive officer of SpineSource, said in the release. “It is now clear that expandable devices are the future of interbody fusion and titanium has made a comeback. With L-Varlock, surgeons can dial-in any custom lordotic angle necessary to restore and maintain sagittal balance and disc height. I am pleasantly surprised how quickly U.S. surgeons are gravitating back to titanium because of the bone-friendly properties over [polyetheretherketone] PEEK.”
