A session organized by the Federation of Orthopaedic Trainees in Europe is regularly held during the EFORT Annual Congress. The 17th EFORT Congress in Geneva was no exception.

This year’s session was held 2 June and began with a General Assembly for Federation of Orthopaedic Trainees in Europe (FORTE) members. Further details on the General Assembly can be found by accessing the FORTE Annual Report at www.forte-orthopaedics.com or at the FORTE Facebook page, which is forteortho.

After the General Assembly, EFORT President Prof. Enric Cáceres Palou and Dr. Jasmin Diallo, who is the FORTE Swiss representative, welcomed everyone to the session. This was followed by Informative Lectures, Instructional Lectures and Free Paper presentations.

Dr. Rami Madanat presented data from 17 European countries regarding the demographics of orthopaedic surgeons in those countries and how their training programs differ. It is an interesting study that will be published in an indexed journal soon.

In other Informative Lectures, Prof. Jorge Mineiro, presented updated information about the European Board of Orthopaedics and Traumatology Exam, and Dr. Paulo Felicíssimo, shared news about the [European Union of Medical Specialties] UEMS Orthopaedic Section.

Instructional lectures on various topics

Prof. Thorsten Gehrke, from Hamburg, Germany, discussed prosthetic joint infection (PJI) during an instructional lecture. He focused on new weapons for the diagnosis of PJI and presented an algorithm of approaches to use, even in the most difficult cases.

Dr. Ariane Gerber Popp, from Liestal, Switzerland, presented interesting options to preserve the shoulder joint in patients with irreparable rotator cuff tears.

Prof. Luigi Zagra, from Milan presented a comprehensive review of the factors involved in total hip replacement instability and the algorithm he uses to evaluate and solve instability problems.

Cáceres Palou presented a degenerative spine clinical case-based discussion in an interactive lecture that involved participation by the audience.

Dr. Filippo Familiari: Functional status and failed rotator cuff repair predict outcomes after arthroscopic-assisted latissimus dorsi transfer for irreparable massive rotator cuff tears;

The FORTE Summer School was also discussed during the FORTE Resident Session and there was a lot of interest in the course. The FORTE Summer School is scheduled to be held 22 to 26 August, in Faro, Portugal, and will be the first European orthopaedic summer school held.
