With the aging population increasing at an exponential rate, orthopaedic and traumatology professionals need to anticipate the increased medical needs associated with geriatric trauma. This is especially significant when it comes to spinal surgery.
In the next 25 years, the amount of people older than 65 years will increase by 125% and about 50% of them will be aged 85 years or older. Older patients are differentiated from the typical young patient in key ways that include atypical presentation, fragility due to comorbidities and health disorders that result in the inability to endure extensive spinal surgery.
These facts have inspired modern spine surgeons to develop effective surgical options focused on minimally invasive surgery, non-fusion treatments, motion preservation technology and biologics.
At the EFORT Annual Congress Istanbul in 2013, Prof. Dr. Max Aebi, from Switzerland, presented a lecture on the treatment of the aging spine, during which he used several case studies to illustrate his main points.
