The Joint Congress of the Hungarian Orthopaedic Association (HOA) and the Hungarian Trauma Society (HTS) was held in Budapest from 27 to 29 June 2013. It was a great success with more than 1,000 participants and 42 sponsoring companies.

During the Congress 235 free papers, 39 e-posters, 21 invited talks, and 7 day-time workshops were presented.

One of the highlights of the Congress was the EFORT FORA with the topic of periprosthetic fractures around hip and knee replacements. The FORA was introduced by Prof. Karl-Göran Thorngren, former President of EFORT, then the different aspects of the periprosthetic fractures were discussed by two foreign and three Hungarian speakers.

Dr. Tibor Gunther talked about the epidemiology and classification of periprosthetic femoral fractures around total hip and knee replacements. His talk was followed by Prof. Eleftherios Tsiridis who talked about the treatment of Vancouver B1 and C fractures; minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis with locking biological plating and the case for revision to a long stem. The third talk was on the treatment of Vancouver B2 and B3 fractures with long cemented or uncemented stems, presented by Dr. Iván Udvarhelyi.

After this, Prof. George Macheras presented his talk on the treatment of periprosthetic fractures around total knee replacements. Then the advantages and disadvantages of the new ostesynthesis options were discussed by Prof. Endre Varga. The final topic was bone grafting and/or bone substitution presented by Prof. Tsiridis.
