The Lithuanian Society of Orthopaedics and Traumatology was established in 1992, three years after Lithuania regained independence from the Soviet Union. Its aim was to provide a united body for all orthopaedic surgeons, to hold educational events, and to represent our specialty in dealings with the Lithuanian health authorities. A few years later we became full members of EFORT, and part of the wider European community of orthopaedic surgeons.
Today, the Society has 270 active members. It is headed by a President – Assoc. Professor arunas Tarasevicius – who was elected in 2012, and also has a board consisting of ten members: Vice President Valentinas Uvarovas, and members Alfredas Smailys, Narunas Porvaneckas, Vidmantas egunis, ydrunas Vitkauskas, Robertas Mikalauskas, Jaunius Kurtinaitis, Algimantas Cebatorius, Giedrius Kvederas, and Justinas Stucinskas.
The main purpose of the Society today is training, as well as active participation in political work with the health authorities responsible for financing orthopaedic and trauma care. Starting in 2013, the Society will focus on providing the latest news and scientific findings in trauma care. We are collaborating with the AO group from Switzerland to organize a combined meeting and provide the best in knowledge-building to our members. In line with our main training objective, our forthcoming 2014 Society meeting in Kaunas will also be dedicated to trauma care, with the theme of “Urgent trauma care in orthopaedics.”
Another of our Society’s priorities is to help our residents in training, including support for international travel and fixed-term fellowships at recognized orthopaedic centers. The President and the majority of LSOT board members are based at two university hospitals in Lithuania: the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences Hospital, Kaunas Clinics, and Vilnius University.
The main lecturers and key individuals within the Society are therefore connected with the university, conducting research projects which provide the latest scientific data to our Society members. Our goal is to achieve a very high level of expertise within our Society, and thereby to enable our members to provide the best possible care to their patients.
