Dear Colleagues,
It is with both pride and honor that I write my affiliation as the Chair of the Federation of Orthopaedic Trainees in Europe (FORTE) for the first time. FORTE, whose roots go back to the past decade, is a large group of young international orthopedic surgeons. Our aim is to improve the level of orthopaedic training and establish standardization for the orthopaedic education in Europe.
I am thrilled for the opportunity to represent this outstanding organization. I am deeply grateful to the past and present members who have worked hard to bring FORTE to its current exciting state. Through the outstanding leadership of many past presidents — most recently of Nikolaos Paschos, MD, PhD — FORTE became a vibrant committee that serves EFORT as the voice of young orthopaedic surgeons in both educational and social areas.
I would like to thank EFORT leadership once again for their generous support of FORTE. I am proud to say our session at the EFORT Congress in London was a success with a high level of attendance. There is a strong wish for FORTE and EFORT to partner increasingly in various projects.
Along with presenting my appreciation to all participants, another reason I wanted to write this letter was to summarize some of our recent activities. Following the London meeting, the new FORTE Executive Board was elected as follows:
- President: Gazi Huri (Turkey)
- Secretary: Giulio Maria Marcheggiani Muccioli (Italy)
- Treasurer/President-Elect: João Vide (Portugal)
- Immediate Past President: Nikolaos Paschos (Greece)
- Board Members: Caglar Yilgor (Turkey), Tommaso Bonanzinga (Italy), Luis Machado (Portugal).
We participated in the Nordic Orthopaedic Federation Congress held in Helsinki in May 2014. On behalf of the FORTE committee, I would like to thank Dr. Tatu Mäkinen and Dr. Rami Madanat for their excellent FORTE session organization and hospitality. We are also pleased to share that the Croatian Orthopaedic Society is willing to set up an organization for their orthopedic trainees in collaboration with FORTE during the South East European Forum on Orthopaedics and Traumatology congress in Dubrovnic in 2015.
In addition, FORTE is working on producing educational material that will complement training and preparation for the EBOT exam. Currently, we are preparing a Study Guide Book Series in collaboration with Springer Publishing. This series will cover all aspects of orthopaedics and traumatology and aims to serve as a guide for residents and fellows who are preparing for their residency or board exams.
Another announcement I am thrilled to make is that FORTE has gained an opportunity to write in Orthopaedics Today Europe on a regular basis thanks to the outstanding consideration of EFORT. Starting on a regular basis, please do not forget to check the FORTE articles in Orthopaedics Today Europe.
FORTE is eager to proceed with new projects soon. Therefore, we are organizing a FORTE Young Orthopaedic Surgeons Summit 2015 that involves all European young national orthopaedic representatives at the EFORT Head Office, in Rolle, Switzerland, on 19-20 February 2015. We believe this meeting will be a great opportunity to elaborate and clarify the further road map of FORTE, as well as to enhance the social networking. Furthermore, there will be a session where the participating countries can present their new projects and contributions. All European national orthopedics societies were previously informed about this meeting, and we have already started to receive encouraging feedback. I encourage those societies that have not yet informed us of who will represent them the meeting to please email to forte.orthop@gmail.com and gazihuri@hacettepe.edu.tr the names and email addresses of their representatives.
I urge young national representative colleagues from all nations to take advantage of this important summit. Your future is now!
I believe, for the young generation, that FORTE means more than orthopaedics. The FORTE philosophy is based on education and education is the best tool to bring a positive change in society, to develop a generation of responsible individuals and to contribute to the development of the human race. It gives us wings and tells us where to fly, makes us socially aware and self-aware and helps us to stay on the right way. The fundamental purpose of FORTE is to make good men better and to serve humanity, besides creating all the prerequisites for being a good orthopaedic surgeon.
Every single one of you has something that you are good at. Every single one of you has something to offer, and you have a responsibility to yourself to discover what that is. That is the opportunity that education can provide.
Yours Sincerely,
Gazi Huri, MD
FORTE President
