The upcoming 16th EFORT Congress to be held in Prague 27-29 May 2015 will host several special scientific sessions under different formats and target diverse participants to broadly cover the educational needs of the whole orthopaedic community.

Interactive Expert Exchange (IEE) sessions: What are they and why should you attend?

This type of session allows a direct and vast interaction between faculty members with a deep expertise in a given topic and a limited number of interested participants. It can be therefore described as a closed and targeted discussion within a small group of surgeons in an informal set-up.

Several experts from different countries form a discussion panel which introduces up to five specific issues related to the main topic of the session. Each speaker focuses his/her presentation on one of the issues which can be either a particular technique, some epidemiology/prevention considerations, methods of diagnosis or a particular treatment along with its benefits and complications.

Important questions regarding each sub-topic will be raised and the audience input will be integrated in the discussion via a voting round. Finally, an analysis of the evolution and changes in the medical opinion of the target audience will highlight the major misconceptions and pitfalls among the orthopaedic community.

As a participant in an IEE session you will directly give your opinion around the question “What would you do?” for each aspect discussed. This is therefore your best opportunity to exchange personal experience and share your practice with renowned professionals in your field.

Internet Search session: Literature Search Techniques

The Internet is a crucial information source for medical professionals. The most prominent benefits of the Internet are its speed and extent. However to search for a specific topic, paper or a study frequently takes a long time increasing the overall cost of a research project as the price for wasted time can be high. On the other hand, an effective use of the Internet can quickly become a valuable source of information.

This Interactive Internet Search session is held as a workshop that summarizes some tips and tricks an orthopaedic/trauma expert needs to follow to find reliable information in a faster manner. Short presentations and live applications of online databases and literature search engines (PubMed, Google & Google Scholar, Cochrane, among others) allow participants to actively learn how to sign in, filter, bookshelf and file information efficiently for research purposes.

Complement this quick overview of online tools with an introduction to EFORTnet, the biggest orthopaedics and traumatology community platform where you can find close to 12,000 resources in the e-library, use the wealth of scientific resources in an interactive way and share your knowledge and experience with all the members.

This is a free session for full-registered participants, limited capacity. Pre-registration is mandatory. Register online and bring your laptop to Prague!

Nurse Session: Focus on patient care

The Nurse Session, a well-established component of the EFORT annual congresses, is directed to all orthopaedic/trauma nurses and health care professionals who want to acquire knowledge and share their experiences around improvement of patient’s health, management of rehabilitation, postoperative complications and other issues related to surgery that impact patients. In Prague, we will once more conduct a half-day session with a scientific program bringing international evidence, innovations and views on various aspects of the nursing care.

How to manage pain? How to integrate the patients’ and clinicians’ feedback into hospital guidelines? What are the financial costs and staff concerns linked to the health care system? How to increase awareness towards the psychological and social impact of surgery on patients? What is the best means for information exchange with a discharged patient? How intraoperative and postoperative mobility and positioning can optimize recovery and improve quality of life for patients?
