The new EFORT Textbook will be launched at the 15th EFORT Congress in London. Professor George Bentley, editor of the impressive seven volume collection, reveals some details here about this special publication, a major educational project of the European Federation of National Associations of Orthopaedics and Traumatology.

Participants at the 15th EFORT Congress — A Combined Program in Partnership with the BOA — that takes place in London from 4 to 6 June 2014 will be introduced to the new EFORT Textbook entitled European Surgical Orthopaedics and Traumatology. The impressive seven volume reference publication was edited by Professor George Bentley (London), and demonstrates his profound familiarity and experience with the subject matter, as well as his long-term commitment to the project. It covers an extensive range of musculoskeletal conditions and injuries and their comprehensive management as described by a large selection of European and associated experts.

EFORT textbook

“The overall concept of this publication was to create an up-to-date, comprehensive encyclopedia of basic knowledge and current research in the field of orthopaedic and trauma surgery,” Professor Bentley explains. “This is in line with EFORT’s increasingly important role in education as an important investment into the future. Our new reference book reflects the state of the art and the best current practice in orthopaedic and traumatology surgery across Europe and thereby also enhances the process of harmonization of education in our field.”

The aim was to produce a collection of texts that would act as a guide to surgical techniques but also embrace the total management of the patient. In Professor Bentley’s words: “The emphasis throughout this publication is on the application of current knowledge and research to technical problems, how to deal with operative difficulties, how to avoid and how to salvage complications if they occur.”

The book is arranged in 10 sections, including general topics such as the management of infections in orthopaedics, organization and advances in trauma surgery, musculoskeletal imaging, and the major conditions involving all regions of the musculoskeletal system as well as special topics such as musculoskeletal tumors and pediatric orthopaedics.

In summarizing the range of the publication, Professor Bentley notes “the 257 chapters have a common overall format. They each cover literature, relevant basic science, clinical assessment and the diagnostic process, indications for surgery, preoperative planning, surgical techniques, post-operative management, rehabilitation, complications and outcomes related to the respective condition. The reader thereby gains an understanding of the total care of orthopaedic and trauma patients.” The text is complemented by a large number of illustrations covering the essentials of the clinical scenarios.

Filling a gap

The new EFORT Textbook differs considerably in this sense from the literature thus far available in the field of orthopaedic and trauma surgery. The breadth of information collected in the new publication truly fills a gap, Professor Bentley points out. “There are very good textbooks available on particular surgical techniques or special areas, but our new book attempts to provide almost complete coverage, in terms of encompassing the totality of diseases, disorders and injuries, as well as a comprehensive approach to patient management.”

The new EFORT Textbook, available in print and electronic format, additionally has a European focus “and in this sense is pretty well unique,” its editor points out. “There is a lot of exceptional work in Europe. Many innovations in the field of orthopaedic and trauma surgery over the last decades have come from Europe. We want to make this important material and knowledge available and publicize the variety and quality of clinical practice, research and literature available in Europe which was so far not fully appreciated by much of the English-speaking world,” Bentley said.

The Europe-wide focus is also reflected through a diversity of more than 300 authors, all recognized and prominent authorities in a broad range of fields ranging from orthopaedic, general or plastic surgery to radiology, bio-engineering and basic science from across Europe and beyond.

Valuable information for trainees and practitioners

The book will be a most valuable reference and information source for trainees in the preparation for their examinations and assessments, Professor Bentley said. This is also true for those taking the Board of Orthopaedics and Traumatology examinations, with the book being partly aimed at providing a syllabus for this purpose. “But the target group goes far beyond trainees, providing education and guidance also to all others involved in the practice of our specialty and related fields such as rheumatology, sports medicine, pain medicine or oncology, as well as ancillary professionals such as physical therapists and nurse practitioners, permitting them to expand their knowledge and surgical horizons,” he said.

Challenging project

“It has been a true challenge to bring the contributions from such a multitude of experts with different specializations, disciplines and languages together in a consistent format,” Professor Bentley said of the mammoth undertaking on which he has been working for more than 3 years, and “with literally day and night work during the last six months.” But it has certainly been a worthwhile effort, he said: “The new EFORT Textbook truly offers a new and European perspective in terms of education and it is a significant contribution to the EFORT knowledge database.”
