The upcoming EFORT ExMex Forum in Copenhagen from 25 to 26 April 2014 will deal with the diagnostic and therapeutic challenges posed by periarticular fractures. The program intends to provide state-of-the-art knowledge on topics such as subtrochanteric fractures, complex fractures around the knee or joint-preserving-surgery around the ankle. Among the highlights of the meeting are highly interactive case discussions.
Periarticular fractures are the focus of EFORT’s next Experts Meet Experts (ExMex) Forum in April in Copenhagen. Among the topics to be covered at this interactive educational meeting are sub- and per-trochanteric fractures; complex fractures of the distal femur, forearm, wrist, shoulder or elbow; both condyle fractures, as well as joint-preserving surgery around the ankle.
“The optimal treatment of periarticular fractures remains an ongoing therapeutic challenge in delivering quality care, even for very experienced orthopaedic and trauma surgeons,” explains Morten Schultz Larsen, MD, Chairman of the EFORT ExMex Forum and Head of the Orthopaedic Trauma Section (Orthopaedic Department) at Odense Hospital, Denmark.
“There are several reasons for this, one being that – fortunately – this kind of condition is not very common so that we usually have limited experience in our day-to-day practice. In addition, there is a great variety of structures and tissues in the joint that can be damaged as a result of the fracture, and every joint has its own characteristics. This has all to be taken into account when it comes to confirming the indication, choosing the fixation option or performing the actual surgery.”
The upcoming ExMex Forum in Copenhagen will provide an opportunity to review experiences, evidence and the most recent advances in the diagnosis and therapy of periarticular fractures. “Some of the most renowned and experienced experts in this field from throughout Europe will share their knowledge with participants in a very interactive way. By working in small groups, active involvement on the part of attendees will maximise the benefits of this particular meeting format,” Larsen said.
Toward this end, the Copenhagen ExMex Forum’s program, organized in collaboration with the EFORT Trauma Task Force, puts particular emphasis on interactive case discussions and workshops in addition to lectures. “The meeting has a definite practice-based orientation. In particular, in the course of the case discussions, participants have ample opportunity for an intensive exchange of experience and real dialogue with renowned experts,” Larsen explained. “They will get maximum value from the fact that faculty members will present successful cases as well as complications involved in the treatment of periarticular fractures. With this ambitious program, EFORT intends to do its part to further improve the quality of orthopaedic and trauma fracture care in Europe.”
ExMex Fora represent the most advanced level of the extensive EFORT Educational Pyramid Program and their emphasis is geared to specialists and senior consultants. Referring to the target group, Larsen noted that “experienced surgeons who are not dealing with periarticular fractures on a daily basis will benefit from this meeting in Copenhagen. So too will senior residents who want to improve their skills in this field.”
Apart from the high level of expertise from which participants can benefit at the Copenhagen ExMex Forum, the local host cites an additional motive for taking part: “It is for good reasons that Copenhagen is called the ‘Venice of the north’, and our capital is a particularly nice place to be in April. The city offers of a multitude of areas, each with its own charm and distinctive character,” Larsen said. “I hope that Forum participants will also take the opportunity to enjoy a beautiful spring experience and the many attractions of Copenhagen during their free time.”
