The Bone & Joint Journal/EFORT Travelling Fellowship (BJJ/EFORT Travelling Fellowship) is a venture initiated and funded by the British Editorial Society of Bone and Joint Surgery (BESBJS) and supported by the European Federation of National Associations of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (EFORT) and the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA).

Applications are invited for the 2014 Bone & Joint Journal/EFORT Travelling Fellowship to be held 26 May to 6 June 2014.

Three young mainland Europe-based orthopaedic surgeons will travel at the expense of the BESBJS to four orthopaedic centers in the United Kingdom to study orthopaedic practice and participate in case conferences and academic presentations.

The centers visited will be chosen to reflect a wide range of orthopaedic interests pursued at the highest level. The program has been organized by EFORT and will culminate in attendance at the EFORT Congress in London as EFORT guests, which is combined this year with the BOA Congress.

This is an unprecedented opportunity for dynamic young orthopaedic surgeons to broaden their experience, present their own work and ideas, and make new professional contacts in Europe.

Further information can be obtained from Emma Vodden, Head of Editorial Publishing Services, The British Editorial Society of Bone & Joint Surgery; email: e.vodden@boneandjoint.org.uk or Sanni Hiltunen, Administration and Project Coordinator, EFORT; email: sanni.hiltunen@efort.org

Criteria for selection and how to apply

Applications are restricted to mainland–Europe orthopaedic consultants and senior trainees who are 40 years old or younger on 26 May 2014.

Those wishing to apply will need to submit a curriculum vitae; a covering letter stating why they should be considered for the fellowship; the names and contact details of two referees, both of whom should be practicing orthopaedic surgeons; a copy of the MD license.

The Travelling Fellowship Selection Committee will be looking for evidence of a strong academic and research background, and for surgeons who will be good ambassadors for their centers and countries. Fellows will be expected to prepare four short presentations of original work that they can deliver and discuss at the centers they visit.

The closing date for receipt of applications is 15 February 2014. The selection of applicants will be made by a committee comprising representatives from EFORT, BOA and the Bone and Joint Journal. Successful applicants will be notified by 28 February 2014.
