HUS Medical Imaging Center begins study of Carestream Cone Beam CT System

HUS Medical Imaging Center, based in Helsinki, will begin the first European clinical test study of the new Carestream OnSight 3D Extremity System in pre- and postoperative cases.
This study of the cone beam CT (CBCT) scanner will last 6 months. The data will be used by HUS and Carestream for pre- and post-trauma studies that involve new algorithms and advanced technology, according to a press release from Carestream.
The Carestream extremity CBCT system captures low-dose, high-quality CT images, which are 3-D weight-bearing images at the point-of-care. According to the press release, such images are not possible with traditional CT.
Radiologists at HUS will evaluate the image quality in bone structure, fractures and the level of metal artifacts during the research. A metal physicist will also evaluate the physical images and radiation exposure assessments.
“HUS is always keen to test new technology and the impact on patient care that new technologies can have,” David Chan, Carestream’s Global Product line manager, DMS, said in the press release. “When this Carestream test trial was available, it was clear that HUS would be able to offer the large number of pre- and post-trauma studies required for a meaningful trial.”
The CBCT scanner can be used as a low-dose 3-D imaging method. The image reconstruction helps mitigate the image artifacts caused by metallic implants used in many orthopaedic cases, Chan noted in the press release.
