WAIKOLOA, Hawaii — At Orthopedics Today Hawaii 2016, John P. Fulkerson, MD, spoke about what orthopedic surgeons need to consider in the treatment of bipolar lesions of the patellofemoral joint. He said treatment depends on location.

Fulkerson said it is possible for orthopedic surgeons to unload bipolar lesions with an osteotomy when the lesions are on the lateral side of the patellofemoral joint. However, bipolar lesions on the medial are a bigger problem, he said. For older patients, bipolar lesions on the medial side could be an indication for arthroplasty. For younger patients, complex allograft reconstruction may be indicated.
