Loyola names new chair of orthopedic surgery
Alexander J. Ghanayem, MD, FAAOS, a spine surgeon, has recently been named chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation of Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine and Loyola University Health System.
According to a university press release, he will lead the department’s academic initiatives as well as Loyola’s clinical and graduate medical education programs. Ghanayem joined Loyola in 1995 as an assistant professor. In addition to orthopedic surgery, Ghanayem is a professor in Loyola’s Department of Neurological Surgery.
He earned his medical degree from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and completed a residency in orthopedic surgery at University Hospitals of Cleveland/Case Western Reserve University. He completed his fellowship in spine surgery from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, according to the release.
Ghanayem is replacing Terry R. Light, MD, who is stepping down after 25 years as department chair. Light, a nationally known hand surgeon, will remain on the faculty and will continue seeing patients.
