Metal artifact reduction sequence-MRI can successfully diagnose adverse local tissue reactions in patients with recalled femoral stems with modular necks, according to results of this study.

Researchers retrospectively reviewed 272 patients (312 hips) who underwent total hip arthroplasty (THA) with either Stryker’s Rejuvenate Total Hip System or ABG/ABGII Modular Anatomic Reconstruction between October 2007 and February 2012. The patients were contacted after the voluntary recall of these implants and underwent radiography, blood sample analysis and imaging with metal artifact reduction sequence-MRI.

Results showed 53.5% of hips had synovitis and about 5% had osteolysis. Researchers found 62.3% of hips had effusion or fluid collection, with intra-capsular effusion in 40.7% of hips; extra-capsular effusion in 4.8%; and both intra- and extra-capsular effusion in 16.7%.

Overall, 80.1% of hips had tendinopathy of one of the muscle groups, according to results. Researchers also found 58.3% of hips had gluteus medius tendinopathy, 55.8% had hamstring tendinopathy, 38.5% had gluteus minimus tendinopathy and 7.1% had iliopsoas tendinopathy. Bursitis overlying the lateral margin of the greater trochanter was noted in 22.8% of hips, and 38.8% of hips had some fatty atrophy. – by Casey Tingle
