Professor Werner Müller will be presenting the swiss orthopaedics MEM Honorary Lecture at the upcoming 17th EFORT Annual Congress in Geneva, on Wednesday 1 June 2016 in the Geneva Auditorium. Professor Müller’s presentation, entitled, “The Knee: Evolution, Function, and in History,” will explore his long and distinguished career in dealing with the complex anatomy of the knee.

Professor Müller received his university degree in Medicine from the University of Basel, Switzerland, in 1959 after a semester of study at the University of Vienna and another at the University of Paris. Following this, Professor Müller was to become a resident first at the Dermatology University Clinic in Basel and later at Krankenhaus Davos, where he would participate in the first public AO course in December 1961. This was a particularly formative experience which had a strong influence on his decision to specialize in orthopaedic surgery and traumatology. In light of the popularity of winter sports and associated traumas, Professor Müller decided to focus on sports traumatology, aiming to restore full function in patients.

From 1964, during Professor Müller’s time as resident, then junior staff, senior staff and finally consultant at the young Orthopaedic University Clinic Basel, he was most interested in reconstructive surgery of the joints. During this time, he had the opportunity to learn under several important teachers, including Professor Rudolf Schuppli, Professor Robert Nicole, Professor Willy Taillard, Doctor Rudolf Nissen, Professor George Chapchal, Professor Erwin Morscher and Professor Martin Allgöwer.

Emeritus Head of Orthopaedic Clinic Kantonsspital Bruderholz, Baselland, Switzerland

In the 1970s, Professor Müller attended the famous Lyon School for Knee Surgery as a guest where he was fortunate to learn from the extraordinary teacher Professor Albert Trillat, who had a major influence on Müller’s career. In 1978, Professor Müller was selected to start the first Orthopaedic Department of Kanton Basel Landschaft in the new Kantonsspital Bruderholz just outside of Basel, Switzerland. Within a few years, the small department grew into a full orthopaedic clinic with a worldwide reputation as an outstanding learning center for knee surgery and reconstructive orthopaedic traumatology.

In 1978, Professor Müller published the book The Knee, Form, Function, and Ligament Reconstruction. For this scientific work he was promoted to associate professor in 1982 and extraordinary professor of the Medical Faculty University of Basel in 1990. As emeritus professor at the University of Basel and emeritus head of the orthopaedic clinic at Kantonsspital Bruderholz, Professor Müller continues to be requested to give lectures, as well as teach instructional courses at both of these prestigious institutions, with a particular focus on his in-depth knowledge of the knee. For these contributions to scientific knowledge, Professor Müller has received an outstanding range of academic awards and honors.

Professor Müller is also a prodigious author, having written more than 150 articles, as well as edited various scientific journals in the past 45 years. Professor Müller is particularly indebted to his wife Ursula who has provided him with great support over the duration of his career.
