EFORT

Total hip and total knee replacement are essential orthopaedic procedures that account for a large volume of orthopaedic care. The number of these procedures is increasing, and the procedures themselves become more and more complex. The challenge for European orthopaedics is to meet the increasing demand and to offer optimal care.

Therefore, at the EFORT Annual Congress, much focus is given to the optimal surgical performance in total knee and total hip arthroplasty by sharing results based on scientific studies. Training and education for the younger and more experienced surgeons is given in instructional course lectures and case by case discussions.

EFORT’s Advanced Course in Total Hip & Total Knee Replacement is considered to be an established element of training for the more experience hip and knee surgeon. Prominent hip and knee surgeons from all over Europe are contributing to the Advanced Course and will share their experience with the participants.

Last year in Prague, the program of the Advanced Course took place in two parallel rooms: one for the hip and one for the knee. Many orthopaedic surgeons expressed an interest in both programs and asked to avoid parallel programs in the future. For this reason, the EFORT Scientific Board decided to schedule this year an extensive knee program in the morning and an extensive hip program in the afternoon on the same day. A panel of well-recognized European experts with a great breadth and depth of experience in total hip and knee replacement have agreed to participate in the 2016 Advanced Course in Geneva.

The aim of the Advanced Course is to present most recent developments in joint replacement of knees and hips. As this is an advanced course for both hips and knees, treatment of infections and revision techniques will get much attention, as will how to avoid complications in primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) or total hip arthroplasty (THA).

Topics to be covered during the course are:

  • Infection in TKA
  • Treating and avoiding complication in TKA
  • Patient-specific instruments in TKA
  • Challenges in TKA
  • Difficult primary THA
  • Revision THA
  • Infection in THA
  • Failure or success: what matters in THA?

Intense interaction between speakers and attendees is possible and may contribute to an even larger success of the Advance Course compared to past years.

This year, the EFORT Executive Board decided free access will be given to all the Congress attendees who either are or will be specialized in total knee and hip replacement. Please be aware, however, that pre-registration for the 2016 Advanced Course in Geneva will be necessary.
