Editor’s note: In this article from the FORTE organization, members of the organization’s new board of directors discuss the FORTE session held during the 16th EFORT Congress and plans for upcoming educational courses and activities. Look for more articles from FORTE members in future issues of Orthopaedics Today Europe.

During the 16th EFORT Congress in Prague, FORTE held one of the opening sessions, which was its Residents Session. During the 3-hour session, we approached important European educational issues, presented brief instructional lectures and provided residents the opportunity to deliver free paper presentations.

Manuel Cassiano Neves, MD, EFORT past president, presented the current status of implementation of the European Educational Platform. The recent approval by the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS), is a huge step forward in the attempt to offer uniform orthopaedic education across Europe and its implementation by different countries is much closer.

EBOT Exam, new educational event

Jorge Mineiro, MD, European Board of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (EBOT) Exam president, discussed the EBOT exam. He highlighted the growing importance of the exam in our current framework, which explains the rapidly increasing number of applicants for the exam. The phases and future of the examination, with a third clinical examination part presented in the native language of each candidate, was further explained.

FORTE Summer School is our new major educational event. It will first be offered next summer. João Vide, MD, FORTE president-elect and current president in office, presented the general structure of this event during the session. He said it will consist of two parallel courses, the EBOT Review Course and the Comprehensive General Review Course, each of which has different goals.

The EBOT Review Course will consist of case-based discussions with active interaction between faculty and participants. It is not only a tremendous help to those who are preparing for the EBOT exam, especially part two, but also to every resident preparing for his or her national board exam.

The Comprehensive General Review Course is open to all residents and young orthopaedic surgeons who wish to receive a general review or an update.

Five planned modules

Both courses run in parallel and will be taught by an internationally renowned faculty. The content will be organized in five modules: basic science, upper limb, lower limb, spine and children, and tumors, each led by the corresponding European specialty society. The European Orthopaedic Research Society, European Society for Surgery of the Shoulder and the Elbow, Federation of European Societies for Surgery of the Hand, European Hip Society, European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy, European Foot and Ankle Society, European Paediatric Orthopaedic Society and European Musculo-Skeletal Oncology Society will be invited to develop support material, organize course content and supply faculty. The European national orthopaedic surgery and traumatology societies are also invited to contribute to the success of courses with faculty members and by supporting their residents’ registration.

PAGE BREAK

FORTE Summer School, scheduled to be held in Faro, Portugal, at the University Campus, for 1 week during August 2016, is the ideal setting for this high-quality educational event. Besides facilitating the 31 course hours, it allows sufficient time to study and consolidate knowledge acquired during the days, as well as time for social activities and informal discussions and presentations in the evening, all of which promote networking between the faculty and participants.

FORTE projects

During the EFORT Meeting, Gazi Huri, MD, presented the projects in which FORTE is currently involved, which include the creation of a database for residents and the development of upcoming FORTE activities.

We had the privilege of hosting a well-known expert panel for our instructional lectures. René Verdonk, MD, PhD, gave an outstanding presentation on recent advancements in meniscus preservation and meniscus replacement techniques. Pavel Dungl, DrSc, presented details on the management of Legg-Calve-Perthes disease. Philippe Neyret, MD, earned everyones’ applause with the amazing cases he presented, which highlighted important aspects in the standard of care for ACL reconstruction and revision. Stephen R. Cannon, MA, McH(Orth), FRCS, presented several interesting musculoskeletal cases, and in an interactive way provided a rationale for management of similar cases.
