Conversion, revision THA likely require similar resource allocation

DALLAS — According to research presented here at the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons Annual Meeting, conversion total hip arthroplasty and revision total hip arthroplasty would be best suited being categorized in the same diagnosis related group.

“Patients undergoing conversion and revision total hip are much more similar in preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative characteristics,” Ran Schwarzkopf, MD, said in his presentation of the Lawrence D. Dorr Award-winning paper.

Schwarzkopf and colleagues culled data on 67,854 patients who underwent primary total hip arthroplasty (THA), 5,089 patients who underwent revision THA and 2,009 patients who underwent conversion THA between 2009 and 2014. There were 53 variables for the procedures that were compared by the researchers via univariate analysis.

The highest number of variables showing significant differences was observed between conversion THA and primary THA (17 variables). Instances of variables showing significant differences also were noted between both conversion and primary THA and conversion and revision THA (three variables), and between conversion and revision THA (one variable). — by Christian Ingram
