The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia has been named by U.S. News & World Report as the top-ranked hospital in the country for pediatric orthopedic medicine.
“I think it reflects a measure of quality of the program,” John M. Flynn, MD, chief of the division of orthopedics for The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, told Orthopedics Today. “The ranking reflects the fact that we’re fortunate to work in an extraordinary hospital that has itself been ranked No. 1 for a long time and, therefore, it has a great deal of resources, many of which are very subspecialized, to better serve our patients.”
U.S. News & World Report publishes rankings on 10 pediatric specialties: cancer, cardiology and heart surgery, diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery, neonatology, nephrology, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopedics, pulmonology and urology.
“We are once again honored to be included among the nation’s best children’s hospitals,” Steven M. Altschuler, MD, CEO of The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, said in a press release. “The level of clinical excellence among the hospitals evaluated makes our inclusion all the more meaningful, and I am proud of our dedicated and talented physicians, nurses and clinical support staff for their efforts on behalf of our patients.”
The data used to determine the U.S. News rankings includes clinical and operational data regarding complex fractures, surgical complications and infection prevention to determine 83.3% of the score-based hospital evaluations. The remaining 16.7% comes from a survey of pediatric specialists and subspecialists, as well as information from additional resources such as the National Cancer Institute. Of the 184 hospitals surveyed for the 2015-2016 rankings, 83 were ranked among the top 50 in one or more specialties.
