K2M Group Holdings recently announced the completion of the first surgical case using the company’s CAPRI Corpectomy Cage System, an expandable vertebral body replacement device that provides structural stability following a corpectomy or vertebrectomy.

Stefano Boriani, MD, performed the surgery at Rizzoli Hospital in Bologna, Italy.

The new system is designed for use in the thoracolumbar spine (T1 to L5) to replace collapsed, damaged or unstable vertebral bodies due to tumor or trauma. It is also designed to provide anterior spinal column support even in the absence of fusion for a prolonged period, according to a company press release.

K2M received 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Nov. 12 to market CAPRI in the United States. The company also recently received CE mark for expansion of its global distribution of the product, according to the release.
