SI-BONE announced that the American Medical Association’s Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) editorial panel has published its CPT 2015 Professional Edition Manual, which includes the newly created Category I CPT code for minimally invasive surgical (MIS) sacroiliac joint fusion.

CPT code 27279 will become effective Jan. 1, 2015, and will replace the previous CPT code 0334T, which will be deleted by the AMA CPT editorial panel, according to a press release.

Publication of the new code is a milestone, according to Michael Mydra, vice president of health outcomes and reimbursement for SI-BONE.

“Specifically, the MIS procedure is now recognized as an accepted standard of care for patients requiring sacroiliac joint fusion for conditions including sacroiliac joint dysfunction that is a direct result of sacroiliac joint disruptions and degenerative sacroiliitis,” Mydra said in the release.

SI-BONE received original 510(k) clearance in November 2008 from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and CE mark in November 2010 to market its iFuse Implant System, an MIS device indicated for fusion for certain disorders of the sacroiliac joint.
