HCT repair success rates comparable to those of other meniscal tear types
Horizontal cleavage tears were shown to have repair success rates similar to those of other types of meniscal tears, according to the results of a literature review.
Researchers reviewed the PubMed and Embase databases and identified more than 16,000 studies in which meniscal horizontal cleavage tears (HCTs) were repaired. Nine of the studies met inclusion criteria and were included in the final study. The researchers classified a failed outcome as any tear that was in need of reoperation.
Of the 98 HCT repairs evaluated, the researchers found 77 of the repairs were successful, with an overall success rate of 77.8%.
“This study demonstrates that meniscus repair can be successful and suggests that, whenever possible, repair should be considered for patients with HTCs,” primary author, Peter R. Kurzweil, MD, from the Southern California Center for Sports Medicine, said in a press release about the study. “I have seen the benefits of repair in my own practice and hope that this analysis may lead more physicians to consider treatment that preserves the meniscus for horizontal tears.”
